Finding the Right Self Storage Unit Size for Your Belongings

A self storage unit is another room away from home. People have several reasons on why they need a storage unit for themselves. Some people use this extra space to store their possessions that are not needed on their daily living while others use it for important business documents. Behind these reasons is the thought that they have a place to store their things without a third party accessing it or damaging it. They have a control on the unit with the assurance of security.

Deciding to have a self storage unit for yourself is not complicated. An appropriate size will depend on several factors as the following:

The kind of items you are storing. To decide an appropriate unit size will depend on what are the things you want to store in it. It is helpful if you list all the things you need to store and measuring the dimensions before selecting the unit. The smallest unit available is 5x5. This space can store items in a small room such as small bookcases, small furniture, small chest of drawers, suitcases, lamps, fans, sports equipments and other small items. So if you only have few things to store, the smallest unit will be enough for you. You can stack or file things properly to save space.

The other storage unit sizes are the following:

1. 5x10- it is about 50 square feet. Items like mattress set, sofa, dining room set, boxes and suitcases will fit in it.
2. 10x10- it is about 100 square feet and can hold contents of 2 rooms. Items like Refrigerator, washer/dryer, patio furniture, couches, tables, desks, and many boxes can be stored in it.
3. 10x15-it is about 150 square feet. Big enough to hold contents of 3 rooms.
There are storage unit available up to 300 square feet, if you need more space.

• The length of storing term you need. If you plan to rent this space for long term basis, it will be good to have extra space because you may decide more things to store along that period. Also, you need space as your walkway during the time you want to get some occasional items.

• The location. If you intend to have frequent access to your stored items, it will be good to consider your storage location. It should be near your place, has parking area or a drive-up storage unit.

• Type of storage unit. There are several type of storage units to fit your need such as:
1. Drive-up. This is type of storage area that you can drive your car right up to the door to access it. If you need to access to your things often, it is a better choice of storage.

2. Interior. This storage is inside a building where you can access it through a hall way. Dollies and other furniture carts are available to help you carry your things up to the parking area. Some interior storage unit have employees who can help you in heavy lifting.

3. Mobile. This unit looks like a small train where you can rent and the pods/storage container can be delivered in your place. This is most recommended to those who are renovating their house and need this kind of unit to store their things. The company can also take the storage container to their facility and store it there, until the time you want it back.

4. Parking. If you need a space for your car or boat, this space is what you need. It is designed for cars, trucks, RVs, boats and trailers when not in use.

In looking the right size for you, you can narrow your option by determining the budget you want to spend in it without compromising the security and quality of the storage unit. Talk to the management and compare prices to other storage facility.
